Premierline volunteer spotlight: How our staff volunteer to help UK children’s charities
At Premierline, we give back to the community by letting team members take time during their working day to volunteer for causes that are important to them. Each employee at Premierline is able to use up to 20 hours per year during work time to volunteer for a cause or charity that is close to their hearts, charities which our staff continue to dedicate time to outside of working hours too.
Thanks to our volunteer hours scheme, staff can learn new skills, build their networks and are able to take a bit of time out to do something they enjoy and give back to the community. This could include taking part in a local litter pick event, clearing paths along the canal, visiting the local hospice, helping the local foodbank or in Steph’s case, volunteering by helping out children’s charities such as Barnado’s and Children with Cancer UK.
Read on to find out more about Steph, and the work she is doing to help children’s charities that are close to her heart.
Helping children’s charities
Steph has been involved with charities for as long as she can remember and has taken part in several physical challenges to raise money for many different charities. She also tries to provide regular donations of clothes and shoes to her local charity shops. As a mum with evolving fashion tastes and two young children, Steph is always bagging up clothes items to take to charity shops in a bid to help the charities and be more sustainable too.
In addition to running half marathons and taking on epic bike rides, Steph also volunteers time to help her daughters grassroots football club, taking part in further events to raise money to support children in the local area.
We asked Steph a bit more about the work she does and why she thinks helping out when you can is so important:
Why do you choose to help children’s charities?
“I choose to volunteer and donate to children’s charities in particular because I had such a happy childhood. The thought that other children aren’t blessed with the same experience because of illness or living in poverty or abusive surroundings upsets me, so I try to help even in a small way.”
How does the work you do benefit the charities you choose to help?
“Anyone who has ever been affected by cancer will understand the huge ripple effect it has on the entire family. I donate household items/books/clothes to Children with Cancer UK who then sell them on to raise money which will support children and their families living with cancer, from research to supporting them through treatment to raising awareness in cases of rare diseases.
Barnardo’s do a lot of work helping vulnerable children through family hubs and children’s centres, they also spend money on campaigning to help change policies and raise awareness of issues affecting children and young people, including mental health issues.”
What do you love about volunteering for these charities?
“What I do/give is a drop in the ocean, but I know it goes a long way to help. I love the feeling that gives me because I’d like to think I have contributed to making a child’s life a tiny bit better somehow, somewhere.”
What advice would you give to other staff who want to use their volunteering hours to help the local community?
“Just do it. It doesn’t have to be a lot but if every single person did a small amount, the results would be huge. It will make you feel warm and fuzzy inside knowing that you did something selfless to help a local cause!”
Working with charities and local causes
As a large employer in Lancaster, we know we have a responsibility to do what we can to help local charities and causes to improve the lives of those in our community. By running our volunteer hours scheme, we’re able to commit countless hours to groups and individuals that need our help. Previously, we’ve provided volunteers for a range of local charities but are always looking to source new opportunities for our team to get involved in.
